Customized Works of Art that Reflect
the Craftsmanship and Pride Their Owners

Lowrider bikes are a work of art. Each bike is custom designed and/or embellished, and are often built for competition in shows. Common features of a low rider bike include a long, curved, banana seat, sissy bar, and apehanger handlebars. Characteristic embellishments included "baby daytons", a heavily-chromed, densely-spoked radial bike wheel originally designed for dragster cars, white wall tires, and springer forks.

By the late 1950's the automobile had replaced the bicycle as the standard form of transportation. To retain bicycle sales, manufactures hoping to capture the imagination of young men who longed for motorized vehicles, began to market "cruiser bikes"... bikes that featured motorcycle style tanks, large chrome headlights, electric horns, and "balloon tires" (fat 2.125" inflatable tires that looked like a small version of the modern automobile tire.)

The trend to emulate automobile and motorcycle design was taken a step further, when Al Fritz, a young designer for the Schwinn Bicycle Company, took notice of a west coast trend... in Southern California 'Custom King' George Barris began to customize automobiles using highly polished chrome, and flamboyant accessories. Kids seeking to emulate the customized drag racing cars began to trick out their bikes, by retrofitting used crusier bikes with custom parts that had dragster like embellishments.

In 1963, Schwinn introduced the "Sting-Ray" bicycle, a mass produced, customizable bike that featured dragster- like embellishments such as the "ape hanger" handlebar, and a low rider "bananna seat". The "Sting-ray" bicycle became the most popular style of bike for kids during the 1960's and early 1970's. The most famous model of Sting-Ray was the "Krate"- the most tricked out "Sting-Ray" ever to be produced; known for it's hot rod colors, relatively small 16" front wheel, fat rear tire, rear shock, springer front end and it's infamous stick- shift.

Chicano Influence on The Lowrider Bicycle

In Southern California Mexican immigrants were showing their unique style and creativity by cutomizing their own form of "dragster". Unable to aford the expense of customizing a hot rods engine so that the car could be used for drag racing, they developed their own "slow and low" ride by cutting the cars suspension. When it became illegal to have a car that was so low to the ground, they added hydraulics to the car so that it could be raised when the police drove by, and lowerd after. Attempting to emulate lowrider vehicles, Chicano children began to customize old cruiser bicycles into "Lowrider Bicycles". Like the cars, Lowrider Bicycles were considered works of art... a means of expressing, not only one's ability to handle a tool, but to create a metal beauty that was a representation of one's pride and individualism. The hard work of lowrider builders was meant to inspire others to do their best. To put their time and energy into something beautiful. These bikes can cost thousands of dollars to build, and hundreds of dollars to display at shows and competitions.

European Style Lowrider Bicycles

Unlike their American counterparts, the European style of low rider bicycle is much more understated. Designer Ben Wilson, pioneered the UK Lowrider scene in the 1990's after a visit to the US. His lowrider bike designs featured a low profile typical of low rider bicycles, but were much more simplistic, and more practical to ride.
