FREESTYLE CYCLING
"Freestyle" is a form of BMX cycling where the cyclist performs bicycle stunts and tricks for
fun and excitement, rather than race on a dirt track for speed, or perform tricks which are
mandated by a set of rules.
The original freestyle bicycle was designed for motorcross racing. Today most freestyle bikes
are BMX bikes with a longer frame and a rotor, so the front wheel and handlebar can spin continuously
without the brake cable becomming tangled in the handle bars. The bikes also have foot pegs on
the ends of the front and rear wheel axles so the rider can stand on parts of the bike other than the
pedals.
Freestyle cycling has several diciplines (flatland, street, vert, park, and dirt). Manufacturers are designing bikes
and apparel to meet the specific needs of each type of freestyle riding.

"Freestyle Dirt Riding" is like traditional BMX racing. Dirt jumps are built on a dirt track. Rather than
race around the track for speed, the cyclist performs tricks over the jumps.

"Freestyle Street Riding", is where riders use objects such as banks, steps and ledges to perform
their tricks.

"Freestyle Flatland Riding", is where riders perform their tricks on flat streets.

"Freestyle Vert Riding" is where riders perform tricks while gaining air on half-pipes.

"Freestyle Park Riding" is cycling in a skate park where elements of all the diciplines are put together.
